Thursday June 9th at around 7pm I was lucky enough to be at The Living Room in the Lower East Side and met Elisapie, a musician who's work we featured the day before. The two of us were able to sit down face to face and have a chat about music and who she is. I have to say, aside from being beautiful on the outside, you could tell just within the first few moments that this was a woman who could hold her own and had no ill will towards anyone. A very open, warm being and talking with her was as comfortable as chatting with an old friend.

Elisapie comes from a racially diverse family. Part of which is Inuk (a Native American Tribe north of Quebec), her mother is Inuk and her father is caucasian. She grew up in a very small town, but eventually moved south to pursue her music.  She is slightly timid, sort of shy, but once we got into the meat of conversation, she really opened up, and being a talkative person, I had to keep biting my tongue so as not to interrupt her.

She is a very down to earth girl, she has had her heart broken before, her dad passed away when she was young and these types of heartbreaks are both illustrated in some of her songs. She doesn't get too nervous on stage because of her passion for her music, in fact it seems that on the stage is where she is most comfortable. I asked her about her performances and is she ever had any weird experiences, and she recanted a tale of one night when she was playing in an auditorium and all the power went out. Her band, looking for her signal, were prompted to keep playing when they saw her not quiver for one second and instead raised her voice and kept singing allowed for the audience. Definitely would have worked out differently if that had been Brit or Ashlee Simpson up on stage. Moving forward, I asked some simple questions about music and her favorites and this was the way that went;

TNYGV: So who are some of your favorite artists?

Elisapie: Leonard Cohen, Nina Simone.....I've kinda not been listening to a lot of music lately.

TNYGV: The Bukowski method eh?, Don't read so your not influenced. That's ok, those are some great artists. What about your music?, What are some of your own favorite songs?

Elisapie: Definetely "Do you hear me".

TNYGV: Have you been compared to anyone?

Elisapie: When I first came out I heard some people say Sade, Cowboy Junkies, and recently I heard someone say Mazzy Star, and I hadn't even heard of her until then!

TNYGV: I thought Mazzy Star as well. That's cool. Do you have any plans for letting your songs get remixed for Clubs?

Elisapie: We actually just started working on a remix for "Turning my back" there are two versions right now that I really like. I never really thought of myself as a club music girl, but I kind of like it.

TNYGV: Ok, so wrapping this up, tell us some of your favorite venues you have played

Elisapie: L'anglicane in Quebec, an old church turned into a venue with tall lofted ceilings, so pretty, I also really like L'Olympia De Paris, in Paris.

We chatted a bit more, she let me snap a few pics with my Hipstamatic on the old iPhone, and we even snapped a photo together. I have also posted a few more songs from her for you to listen to. Check her out  when you can and follow her here at her website. Enjoy
