Excessive snowfall over the weekend was the reason many mid-towners were out of power. While it may have seemed pretty and soothing as the white flakes fell from the heaven, the result was chaotic to say the least. Not only were people out of power, but busses were out of service, traffic was slowed and there was even a reported death in Central Park.

Elmaz Qyra was a 46 yr old restaurant worker who had just left his job and was headed home. Right next to 69th street, Mr.Qyra who has left behind 2 children was killed when a branch from an American Oak snapped under the extreme wait of the heavy snow.  Park officials reported that this was not the only case of trees being damaged and downtrodden by this intense snowfall. In fact, Fort Tryon Park was closed due to hanging limbs and bending trees.

311 reported almost 200 calls this weekend about downed or hanging limbs from trees. "Normally, tree damage is the result of wind," said Adrian Benepe, the city's parks commissioner. "Having trees and large limbs come down simply because of the weight of the snow is a phenomenon that has been very rarely witnessed. I can't recall anything like it."

After Mr. Qyra's death, the city's Parks and Recreation Department oddly enough advised New Yorkers to avoid city parks Thursday evening and the caution continued thru Friday.

You may have seen on the news that 15 people were injured when glass shattered from snow build up on the roof of the Sony Building at 550 Madison. It seems as thought this winter weather has been doing more damage than good.

And it seems the snow is not over yet. More snowfall and slush is reported to fall this week. So stock up on supplies you may need in case of power outages and beware of the parks and areas that may be dangerous from excessive snow build up.  TNYGV.
