So the story goes that supposedly Count Camillo Negroni walked into his favorite spot in Flornece, Italy one day in 1919 and had a bartender fix his favorite drink, and add a little dry gin to it. Thus the Negroni. Whether this is true or not, I dont really care, I just wish bartenders knew how to make this drink. It has now been an experiment of mine, everytime I walk into a new bar I ask for a Negroni, the bartender usually looks perplexed and either says, "No, but I can get you Stella", you see, they assume I am asking for a Peroni an Italian beer, or they have a similar assumption and think I'm asking for a Negro Modelo, a spanish beer, and in turn they offer a Corona.

After a few chuckles and watching them fumble around, I explain to them what it is, they are always amazed, in fact some have claimed that this is not a real drink, simply out of ignorance on their part.
Anyhow, it is a real drink, and it's a damn good one, so for all of you unknowing bartenders and curious drinkers here is the way I like to see my Negroni made.

In a shaker combine the following;
3/4 ounce of Campari(a bitter citrusy appertif)

3/4 ounce London Dry Gin(I prefer Beefeater)

3/4 Ounce Sweet Vermouth( and here I would choose Punt Y Mes, if available.)

Shake over ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass, garnish with an orange twist, actually it is also quite good served over fresh ice in a collins glass with a splash of soda, your choice though.

There you go, nothing tough, but excellent results when executed well, and to all of you ignorant bartenders, get a clue!!!
