Getting ready for breakfast, lunch or dinner? Want something fast but without the fast food feeling? Choosing to be healthy and trying to hold a diet? Well, New Yorkers, look no further, Energy Kitchen is just around the corner. This company which started in late 2004 now has 8 locations though out Manhattan and even 1 in Hoboken. The motto of this new edge on fast food is, "Nothing Over 500 Calories", and despite this, the food is amazingly filling and very tasty.
Owners Randy Schechter and Anthony Leone who are native New Yorkers and have been friends since their teens were getting fed up with their choices of healthy food in New York. Working in corporate America and having to often eat on the run, they were never left with many options. So they embarked on creating the market instead of searching for it, and 6 years later they are on a fast pace to bring Energy Kitchen to all of America.
"The goal is 1000 stores in 10 years", says partner Schechter. "We are building to become national and be able to offer the same consistent healthy food to Americans all over, currently our next move is a store in the Upper West Side and soon after we will be opening in So. Florida."
Well today was my first chance to try this healthy fast food, and let me tell you, I was thoroughly impressed. Here in Grapevine offices we were able to try a small sampling of their extraordinary menu. For starters there was the "Energy Breakfast Sandwich" comprised of 5 egg whites, low fat mozzarella, turkey bacon and served on a honey whole wheat english muffin. Perfect! Next on the menu was the Bison Cheesesteak.

Bison and Ostrich are served as protein alternatives to beef, they hold less fat and are richer in protein, so you get a bigger bang for your already inexpensive buck. This was topped with mushrooms, low fat American cheese and wrapped in a whole wheat, and the Bison meat is zesty and more filling and less fattening than beef. All of this was washed down with a delectable Peanut Better smoothie. The skim milk, natural peanut butter, banana and chocolate protein were savory and fresh all blended up together.
I wish we could have sampled more! The food all smells, looks and tastes as good as you can imagine. Everything is baked, grilled or steamed, no oil or butter is ever used! No frying! and no greasiness from any of their menu items
Energy Kitchen has an expansive menu and is ever growing. they are working towards getting as Green as possible. Their Menus are printed on recycled paper using soy ink. their website is filled with info on the nutritional elements of all their dishes so as to help customers with their already healthy decisions. Check out their website here at EnergyKitchen and the next time you are looking for some good eats, push that burger away and stop by the Energy Kitchen.

Food > Decaf- What's the Point?
by: Kendra Celeste Hughes
I'll tell you what the mother-loving point is! The point is, I WANT TO DRINK IT! For some, coffee simply exists to wake them up, to keep them up, to focus, etc but for some of us, coffee also, if were in a decent joint, tastes good. The smell and taste of coffee reminds us of cold and rainy or snowy college days in cafes working on papers, reading Kerouac, writing in journals, cute hippie baristas and literati.read more
Food > It's a Mystery; Sunchokes.
by: Kendra Celeste Hughes
When I first started cooking as a young girl, I would stick to the basics: mac and cheese, chocolate chip cookies, pizza with Boboli crusts, and my mom's meatloaf – with mom conducting the strange symphony of dumping, mixing and laughing until it all entered the oven. As I matured, I turned to recipe books and magazines, always passing over recipes with anything abstract in the title. What the heck is broccoli rabe? A parsnip? No thanks. Celeriac? Sounds like a piece of celery with issues. But I eventually got bored with my limited culinary knowledge and I decided it was time to venture out, explore, and demystify the mystifying foods all the gourmets seemed to love. I was tired of feeling like I was missing out.read more
Food > Restaurant Review: Northeast Kingdom
by: Kendra Celeste Hughes
I really wanted to like Northeast Kingdom. My husband and I had come across the place while we were exploring our new neighborhood of Bushwick in Brooklyn. It was a weekday morning and the restaurant was closed, but the cool marquee with the little deer and the decor we could see through the windows intrigued us. We're Midwesterners at heart so the dark plank floors, brick walls and wooden benches spoke to us. We're big brunchies, so when we saw they delivered the goods on weekend days, we noted it for future Sundays. I was SO excited.read more

It's a Mystery; A Meezing of the Minds. Sometimes, even the best home cooks can get overwhelmed if a recipe has a ton of ingredients listed. It seems like too much work for someone with never enough time. But that's no reason to pass over a recipe that could be unbelievably tasty.read more
