Raphael Kenyatta and Emiko Sugimoto collaborated in 2009 to launch Arrows & Hearts, an accessories company that could just pierce your heart with Cupid’s shaft.

The product of one duo’s interest in the fashion trends of Paris, London and Tokyo, Arrows & Hearts’ aesthetic is invariably funky. “At Arrows & Hearts we always want to create more fun pieces for the enjoyment of our customers,” says Raphael, who (together with his partner) labors to keep his word within Arrows & Hearts’ studio space in Brooklyn. Most intriguing of the company’s designs — aside from offbeat leather studded and wire jewelry, patchwork bags and leather patchwork cuffs  — are the company’s feather earrings.

For centuries, feathers have been used as decorative items. Native Americans tie embellished feathers into their hair, fasten feathers to headbands and wear them hanging from the ears. They weave feathers into capes, fletch arrows and make fans. Feathers are exceptionally eye-catching — John Smith first noticed Pocahontas when he glimpsed her turkey-plume headpiece, and who can forget those remarkable, giant plumes flappers wore in the Roaring Twenties? Pinions conjure images of the wild woods and the wide blue skies and indicate mystery and romance. So while it is no surprise that feathers are remarkably fashionable, it is a great blessing that Arrows & Hearts knows exactly how to deliver exceptional feathered creations.

Arrows & Hearts’ feather earrings are soft and long, hanging down to the shoulders. They come in a variety of colors and color combinations — grey, red, lavender white, rusty brown, burgundy and wine and a blend of shimmering black and green. Eclectic, the earrings dress up a casual ensemble and compliment a summer dress or an evening gown. They are unconventional adornments for ladies who rather not go unnoticed.

Look for Arrows & Hearts at Callalilai boutiques in Manhattan. You’ll be love-struck. ArrowsnHearts
