Last night's sold out showing at the IFC theatre here in New York of the White Stripe's documentary UNDER THE GREAT WHITE NORTHERN LIGHTS was an experience of sound, lights and intimacy with the hailed and sometimes admonished sibling duo from Detroit.

From footage of their first show more than 10 years ago to a simple sing along with a group of native elders in a small Canadian town, Jack and Meg share, sing, cry and make some of the most incredible noise I've ever heard two people create with a trap set, old tube amps and a menagerie of instruments that are in constant need of tuning (according to Jack himself).

"Once you start thinking that you have enough time or enough money, that's when creativity dies" Jack states in a simple interview with sister Meg inside a small cabin setting during a break on their tour of the Great White North.

Jack White's rendition of the Dolly Parton hit Jolene is haunting and  eerie to say the least. Hard hitting Meg makes the walls shake like a small child in charge of a rocket ship during 7 Nation Army - an alarmingly powerful prescence from such a tiny package hiding meekly behind sticks of metal topped with platters of steal surrounded by wood and stretched skins of bass.

All in all, The White Stripes UNDER GREAT WHITE NORTHERN LIGHTS was a blast and I highly recommend seeing it before IFC runs out of  specially branded White Stripes balsa wood Airplanes.
