Fishcer, is a firm believer that we are a part of a Judea-Christian world, and also is a strong supporter of the death penalty for murders, even referring to this whale as a conscious killer in our prisons.
But I ask you, is Dawn Brancheau herself not also responsible. It is a huge tragedy when any human loses their life without warrant, however, do we ask parachute companies to be held responsible for a jumper who packed their chute wrong? If a rock climber falls to their unfortunate demise, do we blame the rocks for not being stable? A man walking thru central park this past weekend was struck by a branch weighed down with snow, yet the Park officials say this is not the fault of the tree, in fact they say the branch that hit this poor man was healthy and simply just could not hold up under the weight of the snow.
Mrs. Brancheau knew more than the majority of the public about Orcas and Tillikum in particular. And again, this tragedy, while not being minimized, was still something she must have considered when working with this giant beast. Just as a pilot, or even drivers of vehicles know that there is an inherent danger that goes with this activity. I believe Sea World and other sea parks should consider whether keeping these massive mammals captive is a good idea, however, we as consumers are the most to blame, if anyone at all, we are the ones that go to these parks and ask for nature to be brought in front of us. Therefore, let this matter rest, let families grieve and let Sea World operate as they see fit.

by: Joel Chaffee
In light of the charter school movement recently initiated by Mayor Bloomberg, and the increasing pressure on teachers for students' results, I interviewed someone who has been teaching high school English in New York state for over a decade: my brother, J. ... Yet, he's depressed. He continues to spiral over to the dark side. I think he likes it there. He tells me that if it would only stop raining and he could just see the sun, he'd be capable of getting back on the horse at the first hit of Vitamin D. I try to perk him up, but it's no use. He's got SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) apparently, and this is just the way it is.read more

Op Ed > The Country Perspective
by: Kendra Celeste Hughes
The country I dream of is slow, patient, warm, brisk, open, vast, kind, giving, loving, gentle, rough, lonely, dark, inspiring, and full of sky. When I go there I feel like a tight rope suddenly let go slack. All the tension melts away as soon as I see the prairie skyline. Ah, to be there now.read more
Food > Decaf- What's the Point?
by: Kendra Celeste Hughes
I'll tell you what the mother-loving point is! The point is, I WANT TO DRINK IT! For some, coffee simply exists to wake them up, to keep them up, to focus, etc but for some of us, coffee also, if were in a decent joint, tastes good. The smell and taste of coffee reminds us of cold and rainy or snowy college days in cafes working on papers, reading Kerouac, writing in journals, cute hippie baristas and literati.read more

Arts > Finding Amazing Art in New York is...
by: Christian Hunter
Looking for Art in New York is not very hard. Finding good art isn't even that hard. There are so many awesome expressionists and painters and writers, it really blows my mind. I've been feeling a very Martha Stuart sort of "art" sweep over me lately, and after a huge slice of my homemade banana bread and a spread of some serrano pepper jam I made, I choked down a half a joint and went on an art exploration.read more
